Koftgari Plate

Iron plate, with gold-damascened decoration in the koftgari technique, the back damascened with silver to form a geometrical pattern. The quality of the arabesques, and the decoration of flowers remind the XVIIth century mughal repertoire. This type of work is propably coming from the city of Sialkot in the Punjab, well known for its koftgari workshops.

India, probably Sialkot, beginning of the 19th century, diameter: 17 cm.
