This painting is depicting an episode of the Ramayana. The giant Kumbhakarna, brother of the demon Ravana, is sleeping. He was known for his very deep sleep and huge appetite. His brother Ravana, who kidnaped Rama’s wife Sita and started a war, is depicted twice here. He is accompanied by the rakshasas, animal headed figures, which are shown trying to wake him up by beating him, yelling and playing the trumpet, so he can take part in the fight against Rama.
